How do I maintain my 150 Cam-Matic so it works like new?
Cam cleats are maintained by cleaning them regularly. Apply a small amount of liquid dish soap to the cleat and work around, then flush clean with water. There is also the option to replace or rebuild parts.

What parts do I need if my 150 & 365 cam cleats need to be rebuilt or repaired?  
Balls, springs, caps, base and ball spacers can all be replaced. These parts can be purchased at many Harken dealers or on our website. For items not available, please call Harken Customer Service at (262) 691-3320.

What does the150 Cam-Matic Cleat Rebuild Kit include?

The kit includes cam caps, washers, Delrin balls, torsion springs, baseplate, and cam base and instructions. Cam cleats built before 1993 have different baseplates.

Sheaves - Self-contained sheaves are designed for sailors to use in custom applications minimizing friction and wear on the cable or rope.

What do I look for when trying to replace my old sheaves with a Harken ball bearing sheave?
It is important to try and match sheave diameter, sheave width, and center pin diameter.

Deck organizers - Deck organizers lead halyards and control lines, leading a large number of lines through a small space allowing crew to sail from the security of the cockpit.

Can I stack the 9000 Series organizers?
Yes, they can be stacked as long as they are the same size sheaves.

Spinnaker  Spinnaker pole cars feature recirculating ball bearings to permit adjustment under load.

Can any pole be used with the Harken spinnaker car? 
Any pole can be used with a Harken spinnaker car if the end fittings are correct. The Harken car will accommodate piston ends (ring car) and three toggle style fittings. The three toggle cars will work with Forespar and Sparcraft fittings.

Can a whisker pole be stowed hanging off the car with the pole parallel to the mast?
No. If the pole hangs down, it will act as a large lever arm and pry the fittings off the car. However, Forespar makes a special pole end designed for stowing the pole off the mast so it will not damage the car.

Stand-Up Bases - Stand-up bases allow a wide variety of blocks to be held upright, swivel freely, or pivot so lines have a fair lead under load.

What is the difference between the 010 (ball/socket) and the 460 (ball/socket/high-load)? 
Harken added a stainless-steel plate to the top of the base to make it stronger to handle the higher load capabilities of the 57mm carbo blocks (460). 

Should I use a stand-up spring or boot?
Both stand-up springs and boots are used to keep blocks from hitting the deck. Stand-up springs are stronger and stiffer than boots, but boots can be used in a number of situations. For example, if the line might foul in a stand-up spring's rings, a boot can be substituted.

What is the simplest way to install a stand-up spring or PVC stand-up boot?
The easiest way to install is by taking two zip ties and looping them through each side of the spring (or PVC boot). Then pull the zip ties taut until the spring (boot) compresses and attach the block to the eyestrap, padeye, etc. After attaching the block, cut the zip ties and the spring will pop back into place.

Boot Installation Tip: Instead of wrestling the block onto a stiff piece of PVC, soften the boot with a hair dryer (don't burn it), or soak it in warm water. This makes the boot much more pliable and easier to manipulate. When the boot cools, its shape returns to normal.

Padeyes - Padeyes are used for mounting blocks and are also used as attachment points for staysails, reefing blocks, and hundreds of other items.

How should I align the load on a folding padeye?
Folding padeyes differ from conventional padeyes in that the load should be perpendicular to the hinge and bail instead of in line with it. The strongest positions are with the D-ring vertical or leaning toward the fold-down position, which focuses the load on the side anchored with two screws.

Lead Rings - Lead rings are simple, weight-saving devices used to route line for jib in-haulers, twings, barberhaulers, Lazy Jacks, cascading backstays and other applications requiring minimal fine tune adjustments.

What is the safe working load of the Harken lead rings?
The safe working load would typically be the safe working load of the line splice attached to the lead ring and the splice.

Are the Harken lead rings only available in singles?
Harken offers lead rings in singles, doubles, and triples. 

Tiller Extensions - The rigid anodized body of tiller extensions transmits subtle boat and rudder movements, allowing steering by the feel of the helm.

If the rubber joint breaks on the Harken tiller extension does the whole unit need to be replaced?
No. The replacement universal joint (7102) is available.  

Soft Attachments - Ready-made soft attachments replace heavy stainless-steel shackles on racing and cruising boats.

Why would I want to use a loop instead of a shackle?
Soft attachments are one of the many new technologies being used on today's race boats. From globe-circling powerhouses, to local course racers, one thing all race boats have in common is that everything is always about weight and weight reduction.

A LOUP is a piece of high-tech Dyneema line spliced in to itself making a loop. A 12 mm LOUP has a breaking load of 6,454 kg (14,200 lb).

The real loop advantage is in the weight savings. Loops are used to replace heavy shackles and padeye block attachments. For example, a 65 g loop translates into a weight savings of 204.5 g when replacing a shackle and padeye. So, if a boat uses 10 blocks, that adds up to 2.04 kg (4.5 lbs) less weight on the boat. This may not sound like a lot but shedding 2.04 kg (4.5 lbs)-in addition to other weight savings-is key to winning.

Loops can be attached in a variety of ways. They can hang vertically, with a choker, by adding a dogbone, or by using the basket method. With a little imagination, the versatile loop can go a long way toward lightening a boat.

Shackles - Stainless-steel shackles are the primary connecting link in rigging systems.

Are all shackles of equal size the same?
At first glance most shackles of equal size look the same, but they are not. A standard 8 mm forged "D" shackle has a breaking load of 2757 kg (6,080 lb) while a high resistance 8 mm shackle has a breaking load of 4,652 kg (10,260 lb). The number (for example an 8) on the side of both shackles denotes the diameter of the screw pin-8 mm. If the shackle is high resistance, it will also have HR stamped into the side. If replacing a shackle for a highly-loaded block, make sure that in addition to the pin diameter, the shackle has HR stamped into it.
