Melges 24: Main Halyard

The mastbase (Photo 1) has several systems.

1. Vang
The vang is 6:1 tackle built with a 095 triple Bullet with becket, and a 086 triple Bullet with cleat.

2. Mainsail Cunningham
The mainsail cunningham is a 3:1 tackle made of a 244 Micro fiddle and 235 Micro with shackle and becket.

3. Gennaker Halyard Cleat
The gennaker halyard cleat is mounted on an aluminum bracket supplied by Melges (Photo 2). Some crew use either a 328 reverse cam, or 375 X-Treme Angle fairlead.

Gennaker Halyard
On the Melges, there are tricks on how to uncleat the gennaker halyard and improve douse performance. A shackle (Carabineer-like) is positioned under the boom where the halyard passes through to create an angle that facilitates cleating.

Jib Halyard
On the port side of the mast the jib halyard exits (Photo 2). The halyard is tightened by a lever under the deck.

Main Halyard
The main halyard also goes belowdeck. (Figure 4). It is cleated with a 280 Offshore cleat. Some crews have a different fine-tune solution. They splice an eye in the halyard and use a 4:1 or 6:1 tackle built with a 245 Micro fiddle with V-jam and becket and 226 Micro double or 231 Micro triple w/cam & becket and 228 Micro triple.
