Pewaukee, Wisconsin—Harken has responded to the request of sailors and added a line of lightweight pivoting lead blocks to its strong Small Boat line of hardware.

“Our new Flip-Flop blocks provide a low, deck-skimming lead and feature lightweight, machined 6061-T6 aluminum cheeks and fiber-reinforced plastic chocks for mounting”, said senior designer Chuck Lob. “Available in plain and Ratchamatic® versions, with or without the cam, these blocks extend the solid foundation of our Small Boat block line.”

Small Boat Flip-Flop blocks feature low-profile pivoting leads that articulate from side to side. The block pivots around the line axis to keep entry height low and variable lead angles in mainsheet and spinnaker systems close to the deck. High-load ball bearings roll smoothly on a curved bearing race, allowing high ball-to-race contact for a greater load-carrying capacity in a lighter, smaller block.

Sideplates are deep-saturation Hardkote-anodized for strength and durability, UV-stabilized with a black additive for maximum protection, and Teflon®-impregnated for a smooth, slippery surface.

Ratchamatic®
These load-sensing blocks roll freely in both directions under low loads like a non-ratcheting block, but automatically engage a ratchet mechanism as loads increase, giving sailors holding power of up to 15:1. The ratchet engagement can be adjusted to a higher or lower load depending on the sailor’s strength, sailing style and system usage.

Cam Assembly
Reversible cam arms adjust and lock in a wide range of positions for crew accessibility and to accommodate changing lead angles. Cams feature multiple rows of high-load ball bearings for easy-open snap-down, rather than draw-through cleating to allow precise sail control without line readjustment. The Harken Cam-Matic® is the only cleat that will engage under maximum tension.
