MKIV Furling |
Furl and Reef Sails with Harken’s Latest Performance Technology
Pewaukee, Wisconsin—Constant refinements have kept Harken Headsail Reefing and Furling systems the choice of performance-oriented sailors. This year Harken introduces the MKIV. This strong, lightweight, aerodynamic system for the racing and serious cruising sailor is built of the same quality materials as the performance MKIII, with longevity, ease of use, and simplicity of installation vital design considerations.
“The Introduction of two new furling options in one year is the result of a huge effort at Harken,” explained Peter Harken, president of Harken Yacht Equipment. “This is the first time Harken has designed to the specific needs of the performance market AND the cruising market with two distinct furling products. We expect these two options to position Harken very well for the future. Now, both cruisers and racers have just what they need from Harken.”
“An easy-working, dependable furling system is a must for modern racers and performance-oriented cruisers,” said Greg Hartlmeier, senior engineer-furling technical manager. “It lets you smoothly unfurl your headsail in light air instead of hoisting a large genoa, and trim from the cockpit when it blows. All this while maintaining great sail shape and optimal boat speed. If you’re sailing shorthanded or solo, the MKIV is a reliable ‘crew’ member.”
MKIV furlers feature multiple rows of free-rolling Torlon® ball bearings in high-load areas, computer-designed stacked bearing races and large-diameter drums for smooth reefing and furling. A free-spinning, high-strength halyard swivel reduces weight aloft to minimize pitching and heeling. Independent head and tack swivels shape the sail when partially furled. The aluminum line guard, torque tube and swivels are deep-saturation Hardkote-anodized for strength and durability, with a black additive for no-fade UV-stabilization and corrosion protection.
The MKIV furler is available in four sizes: Unit 0 (for boats 22-30 ft, 6.5-9.1m), Unit 1 (28-36 ft, 8.3-11m), Unit 2 (35-46 ft, 10.6-14.2m) and Unit 3 (45-60 ft, 13.7-18.3m). The aerodynamic foil’s double grooves and stainless steel feeder allow fast hoists, douses, and sail changes. A split drum and line guard comes off easily for use with full-hoist sails, making it ideal for club racing.
Installation of MKIV furler’s is easy: when assembling the foil, C-shaped open connectors with low-friction plastic bushings slip onto the headstay wire and into the foil—no need to feed connectors through the foils. Drum assembly installs over existing turnbuckle for simplicity. Multiple toggle options adapt to a variety of turnbuckles allowing the unit to be easily fit to the boat. Optional long link plate assembly allows the drum to be raised to clear anchor gear.
Stanchion Lead Block Kit
These strong, lightweight stanchion-mounted blocks feature free-rolling ball bearings to smoothly lead line aft for safe furling from the cockpit. The 7403 29mm outboard stanchion blocks lead line outside and close to the stanchions to keep sidedecks clear and safe. The 7401 40mm forward block is used in the pulpit as an inboard lead. The 57mm cockpit ratchet provides drag on the line to prevent overrides in the drum and give the operator smooth spooling. Both the 7401 and 7402 feature ball and socket bases to align blocks for smooth furling. All blocks mount with split clamps that fit 1 in (25mm) diameter stanchions.
