Hydraulic Pumps

Third speed added to new line of hydraulic pumps.

Third Speed Reduces Pumping Time
Pewaukee, WI—Harken has added a third speed to its new line of hydraulic pumps, taking the two-speed technology used by today’s Grand Prix racers to the next level. By adding a third speed, oil quickly and efficiently pushes through the system, reducing pumping time and allowing the user to conserve energy. At preset points, the pump automatically shifts to the next speed. Shift points can be adjusted to suit crew strength and sailing style. Pumps were thoroughly cycle-tested in the Harken lab before being put through their paces on champion Grand Prix racers around the world.

“When designing our pumps the objective was simple: We wanted to create a robust system that pushes oil faster and more efficiently than anything else on the market,” comments Hydraulics Manager, Robbie Young. “By introducing a third speed, we eliminated the lag time that is typical when shifting gears on two-speed pumps. The result has been a much more effective system.”

Pump housing is made of Hardkote-anodized 6061-T6. Bolt holes in the housing are lined with threaded stainless steel inserts to prevent galvanic corrosion around the stainless steel bolts. Piston shafts as well as rocker arm are machined from 17-4PH stainless steel. Pump isolation plates improve load distribution by transferring torque directly to the mounting surface rather than the bolt holes.

Pumps have 7-degree splined shafts to ensure a tight fit and to allow the handle to be mounted at the sailor’s preferred angle. Round-tipped handles are made of knurled 6061-T6 Hardkote-anodized aluminum. Grand Prix alternatives include carbon and knurled titanium. Square tipped styles are also available.
