Pewaukee, WI—Harken introduces the new high-load snatch block to its custom line. This compact block uses many of the same concepts developed in the 40 mm-wide loop block used on Transpac 52s as a floating block for athwartship jib systems. The high-load snatch block, with a safe working load of 12 metric tons (26,455 lbs), has a remarkably high strength-to-weight ratio. Its sideplate pivots open to function as a snatch block, making it easy to attach to a rigged line. Multiple applications include tack-line leads, barber-haulers, floating athwartship blocks, mast-base halyard leads, or other places that need blocks attached quickly.
”This block will be a workhorse on any large yacht which has to handle highly-loaded lines,” said Harken custom engineer Ethan Brown. “Its loop attachment makes it very versatile in terms of where it can be used. Its simple operation will allow crews to easily place it wherever it is needed.”
Hardkote-anodized cheeks made of 6061-T6 aluminum house the sheave and keep it aligned relative to loads. The aluminum sheave, with snap-fit Torlon® ball bearings for thrust loads, has a Teflon®-impregnated ULC bearing which rides on a heat-treated 17-4 PH stainless steel inner race. The sideplate pivots around the sheave axis allowing the block to open and line placed around the sheave. A hook and loop strap holds the block closed once sideplates are realigned: the soft attachment LOUP™ is lightweight and durable with a Spectra® cover and Dyneema® core. It provides the primary load-bearing strength for the block and helps the block articulate, creating a fair lead.
