MKIV Electric Furling

Pewaukee, WI—Cruise in luxury with Harken’s new Electric Furling systems. Now with the push of a button, you can reef, furl or set sail comfortably and with precise control from the safety of the cockpit.

Adding electric furling to your boat is easier than you think. These powerful units easily connect to your boat’s existing electrical system. For example, in many cases the wiring to the bow is already in place for a windlass, allowing you to splice into that system.

Harken Electric Furling systems are available in 12 or 24 volts and feature a permanent magnet motor with high torque and low power consumption. The vertical motor is in a streamlined housing to fit into pulpits, clear anchor tackle, and provide low windage. The motor is complete with a reversible drive which uses a high reduction worm gear set to prevent reefed sails from unfurling under load.

“Harken Electric Furling is a simple solution for any sailor looking to add push-button comfort and safety to their cruising,” said Harken Product Development Manager, Wes Wilcox. “These sleek units are easy to install and can be retrofitted to any existing Unit 2 Cruising Furler or MKIV Unit 3 manual furler.”

Keeping with the standards set by Harken’s original furling systems, Harken Electric Furlers feature an independent tack swivel that helps furl the center of the sail before the tack for improved sail shape and upwind pointing. The Unit 3 has an additional independent swivel at the head for further shaping. Tough triple-interlock foil joints withstand years of torque and loading, ensuring longevity.

The torque tube, motor, and gear housing on the Electric Furlers are deep-saturation Hardkote-anodized, UV-stabilized aluminum. Stainless steel link plates resist scratches from the anchor and are easily re-polished. Inside the motor, hardened steel gears are permanently lubricated. The lower unit fits over the existing turnbuckle allowing easy length adjustment.
