HEADSAIL HANDLING
j/105—adjusting headstay length
optimize
speed

correct mast rake essential
On the J/105, raking your mast correctly is essential for optimal downwind performance. To accurately adjust headstay length , follow the simple instructions below.

Step 1
Remove sail from unit.

Remove furling line from unit, or spool as much line as fits onto spool. Coil remaining line and place next to unit.

Before adjusting headstay length, completely slack backstay, mainsheet, and vang.

Step 2
Step 2

Remove two screws at top of torque tube.

Important: Take out top two screws first so weight is off torque tube and three screws around base. Remove three screws at torque tube base.

Step 3
Step 3

Raise torque tube up near feeder and secure by placing something soft between the inside bottom of the
torque tube and foil: small pieces of larger diameter dock line, or rug wrapped around tool.

Step 4
Step 4
Loosen the 1 1/16" (27 mm) nut on the lower stud, allowing restraining washer and notched (star) washer to fall from bottom of unit.

Caution: lower stud has left-handed threads, so nut loosens in opposite direction

If notched (star) washer hangs up on pins at bottom of unit, gently turn or shake basket or gently pry out washer with pen knife or screwdriver.

Step 5
Step 5

Raise foils as high as possible. Wrap rag around rod and use vise grip-style pliers to hold foils up.

Step 6
Step 6

Loosen locking collar with 7/8" (23 mm) wrench by turning it down into the body of the unit.

The locking collar looks like a deep well socket with two flats on top. Use pliers to hold the rod stud in place.

Step 7
Step 7

Turn line guard to adjust headstay to desired length. Turn counterclockwise when looking down at drum.

Tip: Prevent line guard slippage by making sure screws at base of line guard are tight. Do not open turnbuckle past marks on studs (red dot on lower stud, blue line on rod stud).

At no time should more than 2.00" (51 mm) be exposed at either the top or bottom of the turnbuckle. To check amount of exposed thread on top of turnbuckle, screw Locking Collar all the way into unit. Measure from top of hub to bottom of rod stud.

Step 8
After changing headstay length, align line guard opening with furling line lead.

Step 9
Step 9

Slide notched (star) locking washer up until notches slip over pins on bottom of unit. To align pins, you may need to turn drum slightly. Thread locking nut up lower stud. Use a 1 1/16" (27 mm) wrench to tighten against restraining washer.

Step 10
Step 10

To lock upper terminal, thread locking collar up, until it touches the rod terminal body. Tighten against rod terminal body using a 7/8" (23 mm) wrench. Hold terminal in place with pliers.
