The First New Zealand Challenge
New Zealand's Challenge for the1986/87 America's Cup in Freemantle, Australia began with Mr. Fashler, a visiting German who paid the fee for New Zealand's entry.
Then Trevor Geldard (often referred to as Mr. Epiglass) convinced the Hon. Warren Freer to let Epiglass apply a small levy under the MRP (Maximum Retail Price) scheme to create a $1,000,000 fund to kick start the Challenge.
Former M.P. The Hon. Aussie Malcolm was appointed CEO, with Sir Michael Fay and David Richwhite of Fay Richwhite stepping up to fund the 1986/87 campaign along with other financial contributors.
Fosters and Harken
Fosters has had a long and productive association with Harken in both the USA and Italy since 1978. In the 1994-95 Black Magic campaign, Harken entered the America's Cup business through the long-standing friendship between Street and Sir Peter Blake. The 1995 success of Team New Zealand resulted in a real achievement for Harken, with finalists Black Magic and Young America equipped with Harken winches and deck hardware. This victory was repeated in the 2000 Defense when both Team New Zealand and the Italian challenger Luna Rosa were also equipped by Harken.
