In her racing debut, the Juan K-designed 98-foot (29.8 m) Speedboat took line honors and the “First to Finish Prize” in last month’s Newport to Bermuda race. In addition to winches and blocks, Harken produced all the sail and mast control cylinders for Speedboat: head and backstays, checkstays, inner forestay, boom vang, cunningham, jib tack, and outhaul. http://www.harken.com/Racing/Speedboat.php

Between 65 and 75 feet (20 m to 23 m) Mini Maxis are intensely future-focused yachts sailed by athletes who continuously chase higher efficiency and test out the newest high-performance technology. Most are built to the IRC rule, some to the new STP65 box rule, and the majority are Harken equipped with winches and deck hardware. http://www.harken.com/Racing/MiniMaxis.php

FIRST RACE IN 1906

One of the world’s most historic and colorful sailing events, the Bermuda Race was founded in 1906 by Thomas Day (editor of The Rudder magazine) who, contrary to popular belief, thought amateur sailors in smaller boats could sail this tricky passage known for its rough water and challenging currents. His many critics thought the race would end in tragedy and funeral wreaths were reportedly delivered to the fleet so crew could be buried at sea with dignity. Three boats under 40 feet (12 m) started from New York Bay, with two crossing the finish line off St. David’s Head, Bermuda. Day’s 38-foot (11.5 m) yawl Tamerlane was the winner, with the 28-foot (8.5 m) Gauntlet coming in second.
